Brutal Legend lawsuit comes to a close

News posted by Ryan on August 6th, 2009 at 9:06pm GMT

Hell yeah! It’s been a really long time since the whole publishing fiasco began, but we can finally release our breath as Activision Blizzard and Double Fine have settled their lawsuits. This means that they won’t go to court, and the game will be released on schedule.

While the terms of the settlement haven’t been disclosed, it’s reasonable to assume that it involved Double Fine paying Activision Blizzard a sizable sum, giving them royalties from the game’s sales, or something like that. Whatever it was, hopefully Brutal Legend will sell like a beast and make any losses up!

If you’d like to take a trip down memory lane regarding this whole lawsuit business, BRUTAL!‘s extensive coverage of the situation’s unfolding documents it nicely.

It’s reasonable indeed to assume that DF had to pay some amount of money. I hope they blow it on a Guitar Hero sequel.

I personally believe that Activision/Blizzard Backed down after Superior Court Judge Craig Karlan told attorneys that he was inclined to deny Activision’s request and allow the game to be released on time. and any settlment was paid TO Double Fine as “hush money” to keep their obvious intentions to stop the release of Brutal Legend simply because they failed to make it into a Guitar Hero game, and then sued because it’s grown such a following.

Well, I guess in the end, nobody got hurt except Activision’s company image.

Fuck yeah!

I am so glad we get this on time. Just feel great! Bring it on!

i think that doublefine paid activision because lets be honest activision did pay for at least 1/2 if not more of the development of BL, who knows best case scenario for double fine is that they paid activision back what they originally put in because if it wasn’t picked up by EA they wouldn’t have even got that so thats all i think they should have setlled for
OH well Brutal legend, only 2 months now wooooooooo

Why would Activision have payed a cent for Brutal Legend’s development, Nick? The game was going to be published by Sierra before EA but Activision merged with Sierra and dropped then BL because they have a fear of original titles

Well, basicily, everythings in Double Fines favor.Which means that everythings in our favor. In short, Rocktober is a mighty monstor thing that cant be stopped by Activisions puny little ant. WE WIN!

Nice spot, Sam. I can’t seem to find anything about this on EA’s English sites — bit weird. Definitely official, though. However it does say “including” when it presents the list, so I’m not sure if this includes every track.

You might want to check out the English translation of the page, courtesy of Google. I’ll make a post about it a bit later. :)

yeh ryan its not the full list hopeully the full will include metallica and more dethklok

16. Coggs 12 years, 9 months ago

I dont think that can be the full list. I mean, dont get me wrong, that list is indeed awesome, but Tim said he was including every type of Metal and they ability to turn it on and off and make play lists I see like 1 or 2 songs, like Merylin Manson, that dont really fit with the rest of the songs on that list. So I am guessing there is more.

Also, it would be a damn shame to make a game about metal and not have at least one Metallica song. Also, Iron Maiden…and Dio sence he was taken out as a voice actor.

17. TheBeastWithin6 12 years, 9 months ago

The playlist is awesome, but will the songs from the trailers like The Mob Rules-Black Sabbath and Electric Eye-Judas Priest be in the game?

18. Potatoe sam 12 years, 9 months ago

yeh coggs wth no metallica instead megadeth and iron maiden seein the character based oon two of iron maidens top dudes

19. Kajebus 12 years, 9 months ago

If there is no Iron Maiden songs in this game i wont be happy….. i mean the game is still gonna be freekin amazing but it would be nice to listen to sum maiden while i play

UP THE IRONS

I read in Game Informer that most missions are nods towards bands and songs. So for those wanting some maiden there is a mission where you must run to the hills…

Regarding Metallica, Dio and Maiden, there was probably some problem with obtaining rights to have their songs in the game. So I am really doubtful we will hear them. But why all the nitpicking, the track list looks awesome, and couple of bands that were missed, no matter how important they are, shouldn’t call for such reactions. It’s not like Tim didn’t want to have Metallica and Iron Maiden in his game, yea right….
