Demo release schedule, also early access codes

News posted by Ryan on September 17th, 2009 at 12:30pm GMT

GameStopThe whole demo release matter has been quite confusing due to different vendors and sites giving out conflicting dates, but Ars Technica has gotten information off Electronic Arts clarifying things somewhat. The official release dates of the demo are:

  1. September 17th: People who pre-ordered from participating vendors
  2. September 24th: Xbox LIVE Gold members
  3. October 1st: Xbox LIVE Silver and PlayStation Network members (ie: everyone)

To ease the pain for those who haven’t pre-ordered — or those who’re pre-ordering from Best Buy because they want the LP sleeve — a few sites have been given early access codes by EA and are putting them up for grabs today:

  1. Ars Technica
  2. Gaming Nexus
  3. Holy Fragger
  4. The Flickcast

None of them require you to do anything special, ranging from sending them an email to posting to their Twitter account. People will then be randomly selected and given a code. All of them need you to get your entries sent literally within hours, so get to it!

If you have no intention of pre-ordering or purchasing an Xbox LIVE account, I guess the opening cinematic that appeared in the Community Tracker yesterday will have to tide you over. (Thanks to Mykal for dropping that one in the comments.)

[September 17th, 2009 at 9:13 GMT+1] Looks like we’re go, at least in the UK. I just put my own pre-order code that I got from GAME into the Xbox LIVE code redemption area, and it said I’m entitled to the Brutal Legend demo and proceeded to begin downloading. Oh man.

Update #2

[September 17th, 2009 at 11:44pm GMT+1] The latest word on the official Twitter feed is that some Xbox LIVE codes aren’t yet activated, and all PSN codes are inactive until 11pm PST.

Update #3

[September 24th, 2009 at 10:34pm GMT+1] I’ve just had a buzz from EA saying that the demo should now be available to all Xbox LIVE Gold subscribers. Unfortunately, the official Twitter feed implies that European Xbox LIVE members aren’t included — oh man. Can anyone confirm this?

Well, this has been discussed left and right but since I’m really looking forward to playing this game my hatred for pre-order bonus demos is rekindled. Back in the day developers used to release demos way early so people could make up their minds. Now it seems a Demo is a bite sized appetizer while waiting for your order to arrive. Like the insufficient garlic bread in a restaurant.

Can’t wait to play this though. Also, I think it’s a stupid move to release an opening cinematic stating “demo out September 17th” when it’s almost impossible (especially for some Europeans like me) to get a hold of it at this point.

2. Mykal 12 years ago

Well keep in mind the code is not valid until 11pm. Putting it in before then will invalid it. Here is the fine print if it wasn’t seen already.

3. Shawn 12 years ago

i have played the Demo and it was awesome. Might just been my TV but the special sound effects did sound lower : /

4. Snaggletooth 12 years ago

I hope I win one of the codes, I really cant wait for it anymore.

5. Jacob 12 years ago

Does any one know when the demo coming out? Some one said 11 A.M. but the pre-order card said 11P.M.?

6. Andy 12 years ago

Yeh, is the demo online yet?

7. marc 12 years ago

yeah i live in california what time can i play the demo

Seems pretty hard to tell. I’m pretty afraid to put in my code due to the risk of invalidating it, but it seems weird to release it right at the end of the day at 11pm PST — especially considering that that’d make it September 18th for the UK, even though the UK pre-order vendor is telling people the demo will be available on the 17th.

If anyone has successfully gotten it running, please confirm this in a comment! Shawn’s comment above kind of implies it’s out, but it’s hard to be sure! :(

lol y dont u do it :L

11. Ryan BRUTAL! Staff 12 years ago

Okay you bastards, I went ahead and took the risk. I entered the code into the Xbox LIVE code redemption screen, and it said I’m entitled to the Brutal Legend demo and began downloading. Yay!

No idea what the situation is for the PSN version, though.

12. Thuhreaper 12 years ago

Im not sure how it will turn out, but Currently im downloading the demo, Ha i was pretty sure it said 11 am and i just got home a minute ago, but thats not the point. It is downloading, its at 20% currently and there have been no problems. I’ll keep you guys updated if it is successful.

13. Potatoe sam 12 years ago

ok i dont have a xbox i got a ps3 so ps3 plz

14. Ryan BRUTAL! Staff 12 years ago

God damn. The game looks and plays great — can’t wait for the final product more than ever now. :(

Just to clarify expectations it is a short demo, only really serving as a tutorial. Still, it took me 30–45 minutes to get through and it covers up to and includes the fight with the massive vagina thing.

Really impressed, though. It’s actually exceeded my expectations of how well the controls and such would handle, and the way they’re taught is very nice. Oh, and did I mention how ACE the main menu is?

15. Potatoe sam 12 years ago

ace awesome vagina thing lolz wow!

16. Blazzinblood 12 years ago

cant wait for the demo to hit NJ unfortunatly at 2 00 am but im stayin up fuck school!

17. Grizzly Harlot 12 years ago

I entered my XBL code that was emailed to me by Gamestop but it says this code has already been redeemed :(

18. Shlauncha 12 years ago

So what exactly is the deal? I pre-ordered the PS3 version of the game through GameStop online, and my e-mail says:

“Thank you for pre-ordering Brutal Legend from GameStop. Beginning 9/17/09 at 11:00 am PST, you may redeem your 1-week early access to the Brutal Legend demo by following the instructions below.”

I tried the code and it doesn’t work.. is it actually 11pm PST?

The latest word on the official Twitter feed is that some Xbox LIVE codes aren’t yet activated, and all PSN codes are inactive until 11pm PST.

20. Mykal 12 years ago

Well it is after 11 pm in central time so, should be no worries about using it at this point.

21. Snaggletooth 12 years ago

In England from what i’ve seen there is no promotional window or box on XBL yet. Hopefully soon otherwise I’ll wait til the 24th

22. Ryan BRUTAL! Staff 12 years ago

I’m in England and I successfully used my code to download the demo from Xbox LIVE, Snaggletooth. It’s probably accessible elsewhere, but I pressed the console menu button on the pad, went to the left tab, and then ‘Redeem Code’.

23. Nick 12 years ago

awesome demo but shame abut the length, just about to go for a third run through, im gonna keep playig till i get through brutal difficulty without being hit, cant wait for it to come out for real

24. Kelemeth 12 years ago

Awesome demo. The main menu is damn sexy. I almost… yeah.

Shame we’ve all seen the content of the demo before. See first commentary video sums it up. But we do see the intro cinematic. Does a good job getting you to empathise with Eddie and I love all the destructables.

I wonder if there’s any hidden stuff in the demo. Anyone find anything yet?

25. Nick 12 years ago

Only thing i’ve noticed is that the guy who was playing clementine in the opening cutscene sounds exactly like raz

27. Joe 12 years ago

Haven’t played the demo yet, but I’m seriously geeked for this game. I’m a big fan of Tim Schafer’s games, and this looks like its shaping up to be one of my favorite games ever. October 13th can’t come soon enough

IGN gets there hands on Brutal Legends again and Kyle Gass has an appearance.

30. Andy 12 years ago

Okay, for anyone resising in the EU, but ordered the game PS3 from the US to play the demo:

You need to create a US PSN account in order to download. Just find a random american address and use that :) .

31. Mykal 12 years ago

If you need any help with that I can do that. I know many american address.

32. Potatoe sam 12 years ago

ok mykal thx fire away plz?

33. Confused 12 years ago

Is anyone else having problem with quality of sound effects on PS3? Like its super ultra compressed.

34. partdemon 12 years ago

i pre oredered from gamestop and didn’t get the code but i saw online that if u preordered of website u get it.

35. julian 12 years ago

talk to the the nearest mall gamestop, they usally have it.

36. Mykal 12 years ago

Well first simple punching of numbers can give you by guessing a proper zip to verrify
As such 72048 = ETHEL, AR using google Maps you can zoom in on that zip to see streets there.

Take for example 76028 which verifies as Burleson TX which gives you a good deal of streets names like Evandale RD which are long enough for you to put in any number you wish and comes off as a verified address because the street, town, and state can be verified since they are real.

That should help you get as many american addresses as you need since that shows you how to get one with a verrifaction on your own.

37. Andy 12 years ago

I am experiencing the same compressed-sounding sound effects that #Confused is mentioning :b .

39. TheBeastWithin6 12 years ago

Wow I just put the code in and it said that i could play the demo and started downloading but my HD was full so I cleared it and now its not in my download history and the code has been used already:(

40. Kajebus 12 years ago

Awww Beast that sucks =(

41. Potatoe sam 12 years ago

wow beast thats like the worst thing ever

42. kris 12 years ago

i received an xbox code from the @brutallegend twitter today but i don’t see brutal legend anywhere on xbox live. can anyone tell me where i’m supposed to enter this redemption code!?

43. bigc895 12 years ago

press the xbox guide button then go all the way left to the marketplace tab, at the bottom there will be a choice to redeem code, type in your code and there ya go :)

44. r0ckarong 12 years ago

So it’s September 24th and no demo in sight. The Forza3 demo has been released and is downloading fine. I’m getting even more pissed off now. Why can’t these marketing cocks get their dates right.

45. Snaggletooth 12 years ago

Perhaps it’ll be later tonight

46. Snaggletooth 12 years ago

Well still no demo, must have been a misprint of the date or some kind of error

47. Ryan BRUTAL! Staff 12 years ago

See the news post update above. Can any Europeans confirm this?

48. Ben 12 years ago

I’m from the U.K. and no sign of the demo. Why the hell has Europe been left out of this? Fuckin’ sucks.

49. Anonymous 12 years ago

The demo’s definitely dropped in the frozen north of Canada. So yeah, looks like Europe got hit with the ballsack. Again.

Somehow, the Australians will have it worse. You know this in your hearts.

50. RiderX 12 years ago

Hi ! I’m from France. No Brütal Legend demo at the horizon. I had to download it and burn it using Nero… That’s not legal… But hey ! It’s just a demo ! And i’m tired to wait for the official release. The demo release’s fixed to Rocktober 1st for everyone here. Only two weeks before the official game release :'(
Sorry for my english.
Bye :)

51. Potatoe sam 12 years ago

im from ireland and why is that not happening

52. r0ckarong 12 years ago

Well Germany doesn’t have a demo yet as well. Also, Microsoft Germany Customer Support doesn’t even know the release date for the game and wouldn’t give me any information. It’s not listed on the German part of I’m afraid it won’t be released here at all. Pre-ordered it from the UK anyway.
