The most metal game soundtrack ever unveiled

News posted by Ryan on August 9th, 2009 at 12:27pm GMT

HeadbangersFor the first time we can now get an in-depth glimpse at the music that’ll be available in Brutal Legend, thanks to a playlist that’s been posted on Electronic Arts’ official Danish site. You might want to check out the English translation to read the actual news post.

It’s a pretty sweet list, featuring an extremely wide variety of sub-genres. From what I can tell the tracks have been chosen quite smartly in that most will definitely appeal to those of us into metal, yet the many people playing Brutal Legend who aren’t should still be able to enjoy the lighter, more melodic tracks. Presumably you’ll be able to filter them by style through the Deuce’s radio.

One thing to note is that EA’s site introduces these tracks with the word “including”, which is an implication that there may be more tracks than this in the final cut once any licensing negotiations are done.

And of course let’s not forget that the venerable Peter McConnell will be composing music for Brutal Legend, which we’ve briefly heard during the cutscenes in the commentary videos. Equally looking forward to hearing more of that, personally!

The full track list is below, and thanks to space observatory-eyed Potatoe Sam for letting us know about this so quickly. Always a good idea to check BRUTAL!’s many comments for cutting-edge tidbits!

Alot of these songs i havent heard but have been told were great. But ive also heard the other half and its a HUGE setlist, im pretty sure everyone will be satisfied…

3. Deejster 12 years, 9 months ago

Awesome. They’ve got Anthrax, Megadeth, Testament, Slayer, Black Sabbath, Motorhead, Ozzy Osbourne, and a whole lot of other great metal bands.

It’s a pity that there’s no Metallica or Iron Maiden on the soundtrack, though. Those two groups are some of the most popular and influential metal bands of all time; they would have been perfect for the soundtrack (especially considering that the characters of Eddie Riggs is a reference to Iron Maiden’s mascot and the character of Lars is named after Metallica’s drummer). I wonder if Iron Maiden and Metallica refused to give permission for their songs to be used in the game, or asked for too much money.

4. Coggs 12 years, 9 months ago

As I said, totally awesome list. However I hope its not complete cuz it would be a damn shame not to have any Metallica or Iron Maiden and for me Dio too. Sence Dio’s lyrics and themes fit PERFECTLY with this game and he is one of my favorite metal singers of all time.

Damn….. great list yes…. but no iron maiden =( ….. if they ran into issues i would understand but if they didnt want to….. well it would annoy me… great list anyway, cant wait for the game…. and i think i have an idea of what they could do for DLC….. make a whole bunch of songs and stuff as DLC

UP THE IRONS

“I wonder if Iron Maiden and Metallica refused to give permission for their songs to be used in the game, or asked for too much money.”

I’m thinking Guitar Hero might have had something to do with it. No Dio is also a crying shame. I wonder if he refused to license his songs because of Ozzy’s presence in the game? Dio’s great but his pride sometimes gets the best of him.

While any fan could certainly nitpick the list, all in all it’s really outstanding. They’re digging deep to give some exposure to some very underappreciated bands.

8. TheTingler 12 years, 9 months ago

Screw the rest of them! All I care about is… Tenacious D! :)

9. Potatoe sam 12 years, 9 months ago

yeh THE D!!!

10. runnig wild 12 years, 9 months ago

Finally some insight into the mouth of metal! I just wonder why anyone, including Iron maiden and Metallica, wouldn’t want to add their names to the list based solely on tyhe demographic increase that this will bring. Brütal Legend Still has 2 months before it’s released and it already has the biggest fanbase of gamers and metal fans I’ve ever heard of and they are all HARDCORE about it!
I’m willing to put money on the fact that any name on the list will sell tons more albums because of this game

14. Potatoe sam 12 years, 9 months ago

no metallica or iron maiden sadly

15. DeathKnight 12 years, 9 months ago

Awesome setlist. Very diverse with a nice range of styles, classics and under the radar stuff. I’m sure most of the missing bands are due to licensing issues.

TOTALLY stoked to see some Ministry in there. Also good to see Slayer represented… just wish Reign In Blood had made the cut. :-(

A few missing ones that sort of surprise me that aren’t there… Venom, Mayhem, Lamb of God, Pantera, Sepultura, Misfits/Danzig, Slipknot, and the greatest metal band that never was… Probot … but hey, maybe they’ll show up in the sequel. :-)

16. Mykal 12 years, 9 months ago

I am still amazed some of the songs I listen to that I didn’t think of Metal are on the list. The Scorpions the biggest surprise since I thought them as punk not metal.

17. Nick 12 years, 9 months ago

just thought i’d show you this review seeming it isn’t up on here yet

Rob Zombie: Superbeast = awesome when raceing ^_^ (if you get what i mean :])

26. Troy 12 years, 8 months ago

Sorry, I like Ozzy as well but I could have sworn one of the trailers had The Mob Rules in it which is why I’m disappointed. Oh and my dad used to hang out with lemmy

27. The Tingler 12 years, 8 months ago

Yes, the first trailer was accompanied by The Mob Rules, which is notable by its absence here. Pity, it’s a great song.

Also, if you look up that trailer on YouTube, the audio is scrubbed.

29. MetalMadman 12 years, 7 months ago

Metallica hasn’t been awesome since the 80’s and Iron Maiden wants to be Judas Priest so bad its pathetic. And why no Pantera? Dio? Lamb? Soulfly? And as always, long live the king, Ozzy…

30. CapnMorgan 12 years, 7 months ago

Sad that there’s no Pantera – Walk would’ve been awesome during a beatdown. Still, it’s a HUGE list of awesome bands and an epic portion of metal in one video game. There are other songs from other bands that I would’ve liked to see on the game, but I don’t want any of my suggestions to sully the likes of the afore mentioned bands. I’m not shocked to not see Metallica up there, either, but honestly, the only song from them I would’ve preferred to be on the game would be Blackened.

That being said and done, the only other note for this kinda game is that it’s sad that a bunch of legal crap and greed stop some bands from adding their contributions that they’ve already added to the genre of metal to a game that glorifies that same genre. Just my personal thought, but when I think of that happening, I want to line up the offenders and scream something that rhymes with the word “wussies.” With a skull encrusted megaphone. That drips blood. And bat heads.

31. Shadow 12 years, 6 months ago

I’d have thought theyd have put some behemoth on a metal based game like this to be honest, still quite an epic setlist

32. KILLMASTER 12 years, 4 months ago

36. Witcher 12 years, 3 months ago

Well, i just think that all many of you once didnt even knew what Heavy Metal was and said that having long hair and being Metal was “Gay” and then Brutal Legend came out and you were all “Oh! The game is cool Heavy Metal is cool!”. They said i’m gay beceause i had long hair and was a metal head. Then i just kicked their ass. I was a Metal Head since my 7th.

HAMMER SMASHED FACE!!

46. Ozzman 9 years, 6 months ago

Awesome
It’s Good there’s no Metallica, but Maiden…
yeah, we need some Murray and Smith’s solo in this great game.
Manowar is totaly suitable for this game. If there’s a game with metal ost like BL is, ManowaR is perfect for it i think.
